“The essence of my father’s teaching is this: it is not that the person needs to accommodate him or herself to yoga, but rather the yoga practice must be tailored to fit each person.” — T.K.V. Desikachar
Each individual is different and has their own unique physical body and mind. How do we as yoga teachers address each individual’s needs? We adapt asana, pranayama, and meditation specifically to the individual according to their personal needs, limitations, and what they are trying to achieve through their practice.
One of the challenges, especially in the classroom setting, is how to give everyone what they need when everyone has different needs based on their specific bodies. Some students may be young or old, new to yoga or a seasoned practitioner, have limitations due to injuries, etc.… the list goes on and on. This is where the functional part comes into play. Functional Yoga is not a style, rather it is an approach to teaching asana in a way that works for Every Body. This approach explores yoga asana in a way that supports the effectiveness of how the body moves through asana. In Functional Yoga differences are recognized in each individual and instead of looking at the aesthetics of the pose, students are instructed on how the pose feels rather than how it looks. It is function over form!!
This workshop will explore functional adaptations for Every Body. Upon completion of the weekend, you will be able to address the different needs of ALL students in a group setting by providing adaptions through movement and breath, repetition, and holding of postures.
While this workshop is being offered as part of our 300-hour Advanced Yoga Teacher Training, it is also a stand-alone session open to all yoga instructors. Fourteen continuing education units (CEUs) are offered through Yoga Alliance.
